چکیده

We investigate the destruction of dust grains by sputtering in the high-velocity interstellar shocks driven by supernovae (SNe) in the early universe to reveal the dependence of the time-scale of dust destruction on the gas density nH,0 in the interstellar medium (ISM) as well as on the progenitor mass Mpr and explosion energy E51 of SN. The sputtering yields for the combinations of dust and ion species of interest to us are evaluated by applying the so-called universal relation with a slight modification. The dynamics of dust grains and their destruction by sputtering in shock are calculated by taking into account the size distribution of each dust species, together with the time evolution of temperature and density of gas in spherically symmetric shocks. The results of calculations show that the efficiency of dust destruction depends not only on the sputtering yield but also on the initial size distribution of each grain species. The efficiency of dust destruction increases with increasing E51 and/or increasing nH,0, but is almost independent of Mpr as long as E51 is the same. The mass of gas swept up by shock is the increasing function of E51 and the decreasing function of nH,0. Combining these results, we present the approximation formula for the time-scale of destruction for each grain species in the early universe as a function of E51 and nH,0. This formula is applicable for investigating the evolution of dust grains at the early epoch of the universe with the metallicity of Z . 10 Z⊙. The effects of the cooling processes of gas on the destruction of dust are briefly discussed.

Intergalactic Dust and Observations of Type Ia Supernovae

Estimates of the cosmic star formation rate and of cluster metallicities independently imply that at z ∼< 0.5 the gas in the universe has substantial average metallicity: 1/10 ∼< Z/Z⊙ ∼< 1/3 for Ωgas = 0.05. This metal density probably cannot be contained in known solar-metallicity galaxies of density parameter Ω∗ ≈ 0.004, implying significant enrichment of the intergalactic medium (IGM) by eje...

Dust in the Early Universe : Dust Formation in the Ejecta of Population III Supernovae

Dust grains play a crucial role on formation and evolution history of stars and galaxies in the early universe. We investigate the formation of dust grains in the ejecta of population III supernovae including pair–instability supernovae which are expected to occur in the early universe, applying a theory of non–steady state nucleation and grain growth. Dust formation calculations are performed ...

The origin and evolution of dust in high-redshift galaxies

— Dusty hyperluminous galaxies in the early universe provide unique environments for studying the role of massive stars in the formation and destruction of dust. At redshifts above 6, when the universe was less than 1 Gyr old, dust could have only condensed in the explosive ejecta of Type II supernovae (SNe), since most of the progenitors of the AGB stars, the major alternative source of inters...

The Propagation and Survival of Interstellar Grains

In this paper we discuss the propagation of dust through the interstellar medium (ISM), and describe the destructive effects of stellar winds, jets, and supernova shock waves on interstellar dust. We review the probability that grains formed in stellar outflows or supernovae survive processing in and propagation through the ISM, and incorporate themselves relatively unprocessed into meteoritic ...

Investigating wind erosion threshold velocity and the effect of soil characteristics in dust production centers in Alborz province

Dust phenomenon is one of the most common and destructive phenomena in the dry and desert regions of the world and Iran, which can have harmful effects on human life and the environment. Wind erosion and the removal and transport of soil particles by wind create dust. Controlling wind erosion will be effective when enough information is available on the factors affecting it.  The results of the...
